The virtual private network (VPN) is a technique that uses virtual IP tunnels to establish a private connection within a public network, such as the Internet. One application of VPN is to deploy new protocol over an existing one without the need to upgrade the whole network (e.g., IPv6 over IPv4). Another application is to provide secure connection by encrypting the encapsulated IP packets in the tunnel.
